Factory Options: The Original Slab Blueprint
When we were in the streets, stealing cars, stripping them, selling parts, and keeping certain pieces for ourselves, we weren’t guessing what looked good—we already knew. We only dealt with factory options. Not base models. Not regular equipment. The upgrades.
Cadillacs didn’t come standard with elbows, Vogues, or Recaro seats. Those were options. You paid extra for them. Same with certain wire wheels, trim packages, interiors, and performance details. If a car had those options, it was already special before anybody touched it.
That’s how we learned what mattered. The streets became a crash course in automotive hierarchy. We knew which parts held value, which ones separated luxury from regular traffic, and which upgrades turned a car into a slab before the word even stuck.
Elbows and Vogues: When Upgrades Became Currency
Elbows—also called swangas, Star Wars, or Kragers depending on who you ask—weren’t something you could just walk into a shop and buy. Same with Vogue tires. These were factory upgrades tied to a certain class of vehicle and a certain price point.
Most Cadillacs rolled off the lot with hubcaps and whitewalls. If you saw elbows and Vogues together, you were looking at money. Or at least the appearance of it. And in Houston, appearance is currency.
Those wheels weren’t just about style—they signaled access. Whoever had them either paid for the option, knew someone who did, or took them from somewhere else. Either way, they told a story. Over time, that story became part of slab identity.
When Manufacturing Stopped: Scarcity Changed Everything
When manufacturers stopped producing certain wire wheels—partly due to safety concerns—the supply didn’t disappear overnight. There were still plenty of sets floating around. But year after year, they dried up.
That’s when the game changed.
People from Houston started traveling out of state looking for elbows. Junkyards, old dealerships, private sellers—anywhere they could find untouched sets. What used to be an option became an exclusive. And exclusivity breeds pressure.
As availability dropped, value skyrocketed. Elbows became rare like Jordans. Everybody wanted them. Not everybody could get them. And in some cases, that scarcity brought violence. That chapter deserves its own story—but it’s impossible to talk about elbows without acknowledging what happened when supply couldn’t meet demand.
